Genetically engineered food is here. Why organic food is so important.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has permitted more than 70 genetically engineered (GE) food lines to be used in our food supply. The various GE food lines are either, canola, cotton, corn, rice, alfalfa, potato, or soy, and although some are not actually being used yet, many are in processed foods or in feed for animals that are either eaten or produce eggs and milk for us.
This is of concern because research has shown that toxins from GE foods can move through the gut lining and into the human, including foetal, blood supply. Some farmers have also reported reproductive failure in animals fed GE food, and focused animal GE feeding studies have shown liver and kidney damage. Herbicides used on GE herbicide resistant crops have been shown to cause deformities and authorities have allowed farmers higher residue tolerances in their crop to allow the heavy herbicide use.
The talk will discuss the foods likely to be contaminated in New Zealand and what the options are for consumers.

The Food Bill: Good or Bad?

The Food Bill currently before Parliament is meant to take a more flexible approach to food safety, than the previous Food Act, based on the level of risk a food poses. However many people have been concerned that as the Bill is drafted, they may be restricted from seed saving and food sharing or swapping. Some are concerned that small growers will be unnecessarily regulated and international food regulations will be forced on New Zealand’s domestic food producers. Genetic modification has been removed from the Food Bill as something that should be considered in terms of food safety regulations, and the Food Bill allows the food safety Minister to introduce international agreements about food, such as may be included in the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPPA) without a Parliamentary process. Hear what is to be safeguarded, what the bureaucracy may mean for small producers, and what needs to change in the Food Bill.
